Prime Minister Hasina leaves Dhaka for six-day Maldives visit

Dhaka, December 22: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left for Male, the capital of Maldives, at 12:11 pm today for the first time on a six-day official visit at the invitation of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih. Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told the official news agency BSS.

He said, "A special VVIP flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with the Prime Minister and her entourage."

The plane will arrive at Velana International Airport in the Maldives at approximately 4:00 pm. The Maldivian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs will receive the Prime Minister at the airport. During the visit, the two countries may sign two agreements and two memoranda of understanding on December 23, including health, education, exchange of prisoners and avoidance of double taxation.

The proposed agreements are: double tax avoidance, prisoner exchange, and two memoranda of understanding. The MoUs are on cooperation between Bangladesh and Maldives in the field of healthcare and medical science (renewal) and in the development of youth and sports in both the countries. In addition, the specialist doctor recruitment agreement between Bangladesh and Maldives will be renewed.

During the visit, Bangladesh will present 13 military vehicles to Maldives as a symbol of friendship between the two South Asian countries. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be formally received by Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih on December 23. At this time the head of government of Bangladesh will be given a guard of honor. On the same day, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with the President of Maldives at the Presidential Palace on various issues.

After the meeting, in the presence of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the President of Maldives, the officials of the two countries will sign the agreement on behalf of their respective countries. The two leaders will then make a joint statement to the media.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will be received by Maldivian Vice President Faisal Naseem, Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Nasheed and Chief Justice of the country Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan. Sheikh Hasina will address the Maldivian Parliament on the afternoon of December 23. In the evening, the Prime Minister will attend a state banquet hosted by the President of Maldives and the First Lady of that country. Sheikh Hasina will virtually attend the reception given by expatriate Bangladeshis in Male on December 24. The Prime Minister will arrive in Dhaka on December 26 in the afternoon.
