Prime Minister Hasina mourns the death of Kalyani Kazi

Dhaka, May 12: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of Kalyani Kazi, the youngest daughter-in-law of eminent music artist and national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said, the death of famous Nazrul Geeti singer has caused an irreparable loss to the music world. She expressed her deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.

Kalyani Kazi passed away in Kolkata early Friday morning. She was 87 years old. She was the last member of the second generation of the poet's family.

Her death was confirmed by Khilkhil Kazi, the granddaughter of Kazi Nazrul Islam. She said, "My aunt was sick for a long time. She was diagnosed with cancer. She was being treated at home from the hospital. She was admitted to the PG Hospital in Kolkata 4-5 days ago because her health was very bad. She died there today at 5:45 am during the treatment."

Quoting doctors, she said that Kalyani Kazi died of multi organ failure on Friday morning.

Kalyani Kazi was the president of the advisory council of Kazi Nazrul Islam Academy. She was awarded the 'Sangeet Mahasamman' award by the West Bengal government in 2015 for her contribution to Nazrul Geeti.

Kalyani saw Nazrul Islam very closely after becoming his daughter-in-law at the age of 18.

She wrote about her experience in 'Antaranga Aniruddha'. In the beginning of the book, the childhood life of Kalyani Kazi has come up. She remembers her first conversation with Kazi Aniruddha unexpectedly during a visit to Ranchi in October 1952. Kalyani Kazi reminisces about those days of love. This book is a humble tribute to Kazi Aniruddha by his family. Apart from this, she has written Ravi Parikrama about Nazrul's close relationship with Rabindranath Tagore.

Notably, her husband, the poet's youngest son, guitarist Kazi Aniruddha, died on 22 February 1974.
