Dhaka, March 10: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made three proposals to ensure food security for the people of Asia and the Pacific. She made the proposal at the 36th Asia and Pacific Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on Thursday (March 10). The Prime Minister also called for enhancing mutual cooperation between the countries of the region.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on a visit to Abu Dhabi at the invitation of UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, attended the international conference from her residence.

In her first proposal, the Prime Minister called for enhanced cooperation in agricultural research and education between the countries of Asia and the Pacific for food security. In the second resolution, Sheikh Hasina called for increasing the transfer of state-of-the-art technologies such as biotechnology, nanotechnology and robotics in the field of agriculture among the FAO member countries of the region.

In her third proposal recommending the formation of a regional fund, the Prime Minister called for the formation of a special fund for financing and assistance in agriculture as huge investment is required in modern agriculture.

Besides, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon all to work together to ensure food for the hungry people of South Asia. At the same time, Sheikh Hasina proposed to the countries of the region to increase agricultural research and education cooperation among themselves, exchange technology and set up special regional funds for agricultural finance.

Sheikh Hasina said, "Certainly food security is the most important issue for the people. About 305.7 million people in South Asia are still hungry. If we all sincerely try, we can easily arrange food for all of them."

Highlighting the importance of uniting all countries and nations in tackling any crisis, the Prime Minister said, "The Covid-19 pandemic has shown how helpless people are in tackling such disasters. This pandemic has also shown how to deal with such disasters together."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the inauguration of the 36th Asia and Pacific Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Among others, Director General of Food and Agriculture Organization Qu Dongyu and Fisheries and Livestock Minister of Bangladesh S M Rezaul Karim also spoke. Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak presided over the function.
