Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 2 November 2023: Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been elected as the Regional Director of the World Health Organization. He was elected to the position by a margin of 8-2 votes.

Voting for the post of new Regional Director was held in New Delhi on Wednesday. In this, Saima Wazed got the support of 8 countries. On the other hand, the candidate of Nepal got the support of 2 countries. The organization has 11 members in this region. Meanwhile, Myanmar could not vote this time. As a result, Saima Wazed Putul will serve as the head of the World Health Organization in the South Asia region for the next 5 years.

Autism expert Saima has previously worked as an autism expert and consultant in various international organizations including the United Nations. India's Punam Kshetrapal is currently serving as the regional head.

Saima Wazed Putul will be the first Bangladeshi to hold the post. The government earlier nominated Saima Wazed to run for the post of regional head of the World Health Organization. Neighboring India supports the candidate of Bangladesh.
