Dhaka, April 20: OC Rafiqul Islam was first removed from Sonargaon police station after the resort scandal of Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque, this time he lost his job. On Monday, a circular from the Police-1 branch of the Home Ministry's public security department said Rafiqul Islam would be sent to retire.

The reason given in the notification was that Rafiqul Islam had completed 25 years of service and was retired in the public interest. He has been informed that he will get all the benefits of retirement.

On April 4, Rafiqul Islam was removed from Narayanganj's Sonargaon police station and added to the Narayanganj police lines as a police inspector (unarmed).

Earlier in the day, Hefazat's joint secretary general Mamunul Haque took his alleged second wife to the Royal Resort in Sonargaon and detained her. Upon receiving the news, the police and the assistant commissioner (land) went there.

Hundreds of Hefazat activists and students of the madrasa stormed the Royal Resort and snatched Mamunul Haque from the police. Later, they set fire to the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, blocked the road and vandalized it.

Hefazat leaders also lodged a complaint with the police on behalf of Mamunul, which was accepted by OC Rafiq. Police have arrested several Hefazat leaders in various cases after the incident. Mamunul was also arrested on Sunday.
