Dhaka, October 7: Ayesha Siddique Minni, who was sentenced to death in the notorious Rifat Sharif murder case in Barguna, has applied to the High Court seeking acquittal. On Tuesday (October 6), Minni's lawyer Makkia Fatema Islam filed the petition in the relevant branch of the High Court.

On October 4, Minni's father Mozammel Hossain Kishore came to the High Court with a copy of the power of attorney signed by Minni and a signed copy of the verdict of the case.

On the morning of that day (October 4), the death reference documents of six accused including Minni reached the High Court.

As a rule, all proceedings in the death reference case are referred to the High Court for approval.

The accused will be able to appeal within seven days after the copy of the verdict reaches the High Court.

Accordingly, the lawyers appealed within the specified days.

Earlier on September 30, the court sentenced six people, including Minni, to death in the Rifat Sharif murder case.

The verdict was pronounced with the acquittal of four other accused.

On June 26, 2019, Rifat Sharif was hacked to death in front of his wife Ayesha Siddique Minni in front of Barguna Government College.

After that incident, Rifat's father Abdul Halim Sharif filed a murder case with Barguna police station.

Minni was made the main witness.

The main accused in the case, Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond, was killed in a gunfight with police on July 2 of that year.

Then the investigation of the case took a dramatic turn. Minnie was called to Barguna Police Lines from home for questioning and arrested.

Minni applied for bail in the high court after being rejected several times in the lower court.

Then on August 29, 2019, the bench of High Court Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman granted bail to Minni.

The bail order said Minnie would remain in her father's custody and would not be able to speak to the media.

Minni was out on bail until the death sentence was announced last Wednesday.
