Russia to provide Bangladesh with high capacity reactor for Rooppur nuclear power plant

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 21: Bangladesh will be given high-capacity reactors for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant for optimum power generation. In addition, fresh nuclear fuel for RNPP will arrive in Bangladesh in October next year.

The director general of Russia's state atomic energy agency Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, said this during a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban on Thursday.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists. Rosatom Director General told the Prime Minister that they would like to celebrate the arrival of fresh nuclear fuel in Bangladesh with the participation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General and concerned persons.

Mentioning that they are training Bangladeshi manpower for RNPP, he said, Russia is interested in conducting research in nuclear science and technology in Bangladesh.

He also said that Russia is helping to build the infrastructure of the nuclear regime in Bangladesh.

At the beginning of the meeting, Alexey Likhachev informed and explained to the Prime Minister about the development and progress of the work of RNPP. The Prime Minister thanked Russia, especially Rosatom DG, for providing support during the Covid-19 pandemic and for continuing construction at full speed.

Sheikh Hasina praised Russia for its assistance in the power and energy sector of Bangladesh since its independence.

She said that Russian stakeholders can emphasize on manpower development of RNPP so that Bangladeshi workers can independently manage and maintain RNPP. She emphasized on the safety of nuclear power plants.

At this time, Ambassador at Large Mohammad Ziauddin, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister. Ahmad Kaykaus, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Ziaul Hasan, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Russia Kamrul Ahsan, and Ambassador of Russia Alexander Mantitsky were present.
