Shafiqul Islam to remain DMP commissioner for another year

Dhaka, October 29: Additional Inspector General of Police Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has received a year long extension as the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). A notification in this regard has been issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Thursday (October 28). By the order of the President, the contract of the Ministry of Public Administration and the Deputy Secretary of the Overseas Recruitment Branch Md. Oliur Rahman has signed the circular.

The notification said, "According to Section 49 of the Government Employment Act, 2018, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has been appointed as the DMP Commissioner on a contract basis for a period of one year from October 30 or the date of joining, subject to suspension of his retirement leave and related benefits. Other terms of appointment will be determined by the approved contract."

On September 7, 2019, the government appointed Shafiqul Islam as the 34th Commissioner of DMP. He was due to retire on October 30 at the time of his retirement age. It is learned that he has been kept in this post, as he has been working tirelessly to build a transparent, accountable police system since taking charge.

Meanwhile, on October 17, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam was promoted to Grade-1 post by a circular signed by Dhananjay Kumar Das, Deputy Secretary, Police-1 Branch, Public Security Department, Home Ministry.

The circular said that in addition to the post of Additional Inspector General of Police Grade-2 of the BCS (Police) cadre, two supernumerary posts of Grade-1 (in case of retirement, removal or dismissal for any other reason) were temporarily sanctioned by the government.

It is learned that during his two years in the DMP, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam formed a central monitoring cell on GDs and cases under the supervision of senior officers to prevent harassment for recording general diaries (GDs) and cases at the police station. As a result, transparency and accountability in proper GD and case investigation is established.

He also took initiative to speed up the activities of women, children, elderly and disabled service desks set up in each police station including online GD to ensure citizen service.

According to DMP sources, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam is working relentlessly to build a DMP suitable for developed countries. As a result of his well-thought-out planning, guidance and dynamic leadership, the success achieved by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in various fields will go down in history.
