Dhaka, December 18: Emphasizing on further consolidating the economies of Bangladesh and India, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said both the countries could further enrich the global and regional value-chain by seizing the opportunities provided.

The Prime Minister said this in her inaugural address at the Bangladesh-India Virtual Summit on Thursday. Describing the existing communication system between the two neighboring countries as a catalyst in this regard, the Prime Minister said, "A great example is the resumption of the Chilahati-Haldibari rail link which we will inaugurate."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the Bangladesh delegation from Ganobhaban. On the other hand, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the Indian delegation from New Delhi.

"We are pleased to acknowledge the growing interdependence of the economies of Bangladesh and India," she said, adding that a large number of Indian nationals are employed in Bangladesh's manufacturing and services sectors and send remittances to their home countries. On the other hand, India receives the highest number of tourists and medical recipients from Bangladesh.

"Bangladesh-India relations are going through a landmark moment," she said, adding that "Bangladesh is going to celebrate its 50th anniversary as an independent nation." Bangladesh and India are also in their 50th year of establishing diplomatic relations.

She further said, "We are celebrating the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Just a few months ago, we celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of your nation."

‘In Bangladesh, we have issued a special postage stamp as a token of respect to Bapuji. We will inaugurate a stamp of the Indian Postal Department in honor of Bangabandhu today,” she said.

She expressed her sincere gratitude to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, for spontaneously coming together to celebrate these important events and recalled the cooperation of the Government and people of India in the Liberation War of 1971.
