Sheikh Russel's 60th birth anniversary today

Dhaka, Oct 18: Today is the 60th birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. To highlight the life of Shishu Russel to children and teenagers, his birthday has been declared as 'Sheikh Russel Day'.

President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of Sheikh Russel Day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's younger brother Sheikh Russell was born on this day in 1964 at the historic memorial-studded Bangabandhu Bhavan in Dhanmondi. On August 15, 1975, the child Sheikh Russell did not escape from the ruthless bullets of the hateful killers, the enemies of humanity. Bangabandhu was also brutally killed by the ghouls. He was a fourth-year student at the University Laboratory School.

On the occasion of Sheikh Russel's birthday, Awami League and its affiliated organizations have taken up detailed programs for various social and cultural organizations. On the occasion of Shaheed Sheikh Russel's birthday, Awami League has organized wreath-laying, Fateha reading, Milad and Doa Mahfil at the graves of all the martyrs who died on August 15, including Sheikh Russell, who is lying in eternal sleep at Banani Cemetery.

Along with Awami League, Dhaka Metropolitan North-South Awami League, affiliated organizations and various social and cultural organizations have taken extensive programmes.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader in a statement requested party leaders, supporters and people from all walks of life to participate in the programme organized on the occasion of the auspicious birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He called on the leaders and workers of all levels of Awami League and allied organizations across the country to carry out the programme on this occasion.
