Shops, shopping malls to open from Sunday

Dhaka, April 23: Shops and shopping malls will remain open from next Sunday (April 25) in compliance with the hygiene rules. A notification has been issued by the cabinet department on Friday (April 23) directing to keep shops and shopping malls open from 10 am to 5 pm.

The circular, signed by Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet Md. Rezaul Islam, said that the new directives on conditional overall activities / ban on movement to prevent the spread of coronavirus-borne diseases (COVID-19) have been followed by a large number of lives.

The notification further said that the management committee of the concerned market / organization will take necessary steps regarding the observance of hygiene rules. An eight-day strict lockdown started from 6 am on April 14 to prevent Covid-19 infection. The government issued 13 instructions to keep the shops and shopping malls closed during the lockdown. That period ends at midnight last Wednesday (April 21). However, the corona infection situation has not improved yet. Therefore, the lockdown period has been extended till midnight on April 28.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association demanded the opening of shops and shopping malls. They raised their demands at the highest level of government in this regard. Later, Helal Uddin, president of the shop owners' association, told reporters that shops and shopping malls could be opened by Monday.

Earlier, there was a lockdown or restriction from 6 am on April 5 to 6 am on April 14 as coronavirus infection was increasing at an alarming rate. However, this lockdown was largely ineffective, leaving public transport and markets open.
