Sitakunda cotton warehouse: Fire not doused even after seven hours

Dhaka, March 11: The fire in a cotton warehouse in Chittagong's Sitakunda was not brought under control even after seven hours. The fire broke out around 10:30 am on Saturday (March 11). Eight units of four fire stations are working to control the fire. The fire took place in the cotton warehouse in Chhota Kumira area of Ward No. 4 of Kumira Union of Upazila.

Deputy Assistant Director of Chittagong Divisional Fire Service Abdul Hamid Mia told Bangla Tribune that a fire broke out in the cotton warehouse of a yarn factory in Sitakunda. Eight units from Sitakunda, Kumira, Bayezid and Agrabad fire stations are working to control the fire.

He also said that the cotton warehouse is very big. The fire spread around the warehouse. Due to this, it takes some time to control the fire.

Tofail Ahmed, OC of Sitakunda police station, said that there was a fire in the cotton warehouse of a yarn factory. Police and fire service personnel are on the scene.

Earlier, an explosion occurred at Seema Oxygen Plant in Kadmarsul area of Sonaichari Union of Sitakunda Upazila on Saturday, March 4. Seven people were killed in this incident. At least 25 people were burnt and injured.

Currently eight units of fire service Kumira, Sitakunda and Agrabad fire stations are working to control the fire. Sultan Mahmud, Senior Station Officer of Kumira Fire Station, who was on the spot, said that the fire broke out at Lokman Godown opposite Nemson Container Depot. There is no nameplate outside the godown. A lot of cotton is stored in godowns. We surrounded the fire from all sides. The fire is unlikely to spread further. However, due to the large cotton godown, it takes more time to bring the fire under control.
