Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 24: Russia and Ukraine are the major sources of wheat imports to Bangladesh. As the two countries became embroiled in war, a crisis was created in Bangladesh with the source of wheat import like many other countries.

The crisis was exacerbated when India, another major wheat exporter, imposed a ban on wheat exports. Despite Bangladesh being out of that ban, the wheat market became volatile. Prices continue to rise. At the same time, the prices of all wheat products have also gone up. But in the last few days, after six cargo ships carrying wheat from India, Canada and Australia anchored at Chittagong Port, the price of wheat has started decreasing in the market.

According to port sources, one lakh five thousand tonnes of wheat are being officially imported. Of these, wheat is being unloaded from a ship of 52,500 tonnes. The Food Department is preparing to start unloading from another ship on Monday (May 23) night.

According to food department and Chittagong port sources, a government ship named 'MV V Star' brought 52,500 tonnes of wheat from Kandla port in India's Gujarat. The consignment arrived at Chittagong Port on Sunday (May 22).

Earlier on May 16, 'MV Emanuel Sea' brought another consignment of 52,500 tonnes of wheat from India. The food department is currently unloading wheat from the ship. Of the 52,500 tonnes, 31,500 tonnes of wheat will be unloaded from the ship at Chittagong port, while the remaining 21,000 tonnes will be unloaded at Mongla port.

Sunil Dutta, assistant controller of the Chittagong Food Transport and Preservation Office, said there are now two ships carrying imported wheat at Chittagong port. Both ships came from India. Among those, wheat is being unloaded from the ship 'MV Emanuel Sea' which came on May 16. The remaining 21,000 tonnes of wheat will be unloaded at Mongla port. It could move to Mongla by Wednesday. The ship, which arrived on Sunday (May 22), will be unloaded from Monday night after the completion of customs formalities.
