Dhaka, June 17: The water of the Teesta river has started to rise due to the hill slopes coming down from the upstream and the continuous rainfall of several days. The authorities have opened 44 sluices of the barrage to control the situation. Teesta water flow was recorded at 51.93 cm at Dalia Point of the country's largest irrigation project Teesta Barrage at 12 noon on Saturday. which is flowing 67 cm below the danger line (normal 52.60 cm).

Earlier at 6 am and 9 am the water flow recorded at this point was 52.06 cm and 52.02 cm. Dalia Water Development Board water gauge Nurul Islam said that the Teesta water started rising from Friday night. However, the water flow has started to decrease a little since morning. If it decreases in this way, the water flow may be normal in the afternoon.

Dalia Water Development Board Executive Engineer Asfauddaula said that the water level of Teesta has increased due to the hill slopes coming down from the upstream and continuous rainfall for a few days. However, efforts are being made to control the water by opening 44 gates. He also said that the water will be increasing and decreasing. If the water rises, the lower areas of Teestapar may be flooded. Water Development Board is always prepared to deal with floods.

Meanwhile, due to the sudden rise in Teesta water, the low-lying areas along the river banks of Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat and many homesteads in Char have been flooded, the locals said. Farmers are worried about the crop field being submerged in water and crop loss. Due to the sudden rise in water, they are also in trouble with cattle and birds.
