Sultan of Brunei to arrive in Dhaka on Saturday

Dhaka, October 11: On the invitation of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei is coming to Dhaka on a three-day visit on Saturday, October 15. Bangladesh wants to sign an agreement and two memorandums of understanding (MOU) with the country during his visit.

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen gave this information in a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (October 11) regarding the visit of the Sultan of Brunei.

He said, this will be the first visit of Brunei's head of state. In this state visit of the Sultan, bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding are likely to be signed in addition to discussions on bilateral cooperation in various fields. These include Bilateral Aviation Agreement, Memorandum of Understanding on Bangladeshi Manpower Recruitment Cooperation, Memorandum of Understanding on Recognition of Certificates of Seafarers by the two countries.

Momen expressed hope that the first visit of the Sultan of Brunei to Bangladesh will be successful and fruitful.

He said that in the past decade, cooperation with Brunei has been expanding in various fields including trade, investment, energy, agriculture, human resource development. Brunei is interested in increasing mutual cooperation in the areas of economic diversification, ensuring food security, human resource development, infrastructure construction, health services and energy etc. in the implementation of the development program adopted under the Vision-2035 of Brunei.

The foreign minister said that both countries can benefit from the establishment of bilateral cooperation in various fields in Brunei, a high-income country rich in energy resources. Bangladesh and Brunei share the same views on various regional and international important issues including terrorism and extremism, drug and human trafficking, environmental protection and climate change, poverty alleviation, sustainable development. It is working on the basis of mutual cooperation in various regional and multilateral forums including UN, OIC, ARF, Commonwealth.

Mentioning that there will be an opportunity to discuss the Rohingya issue during the Sultan's visit, Momen said that there will be an opportunity for greater exchange of views between the Prime Minister and the Sultan on various regional and international important issues including the Rohingya issue. In addition, the visit will create an opportunity to discuss the development of Bangladesh's relationship with ASEAN, an organization of Southeast Asian countries, and the issue of becoming ASEAN's sectoral dialogue partner more seriously.
