Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 14: Finally, the activities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) are returning to normal. This activity has started from today with the opening of the student dormitory hall.

A virtual meeting was held with the members of SUST Syndicate on Sunday (February 13) at 7 pm. A number of decisions were taken at the meeting to normalize the activities of the university.

University Registrar Professor Ishfaqul Hossain said on Sunday that the residential halls would be opened on Monday, February 14. Online classes will start as usual from tomorrow and if there are no restrictions from the government, the classroom activities will continue from February 22.

Earlier on January 13, the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) had started an agitation demanding the resignation of the chairperson of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall. Later, in the face of student movement, Vice Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed called an emergency syndicate meeting at his residence on the evening of January 16 and announced the closure of the university indefinitely. The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting on Sunday, 28 days after that meeting.

The Education Minister went to Sylhet on Friday (February 11) morning to resolve the ongoing crisis in SUST. Later in the afternoon, the Minister spoke to the agitating students at Sylhet Circuit House. Deputy Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel and UGC Secretary Ferdous Ahmed were present on the occasion. At the meeting, the students raised eight demands to the education minister.

In a subsequent meeting, Vice-Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed expressed regret over the incident that took place in the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) movement on January 16, a day after the Education Minister advised the VC to continue the Shabir activities. He expressed his sympathy and condolences to the teachers, students, officials and employees injured in the incident. The normal functioning of the university was announced at an emergency meeting of the syndicate a day after they hoped to return to normal activities during the press briefing.
