Dhaka, May 22: Women journalists have gone on a symbolic hunger strike demanding the unconditional release of Rozina Islam, a senior reporter of the daily Prothom Alo. The symbolic fast began at 11:30 am on Saturday (May 22) at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) premises. Prothom Alo's management council and other journalists expressed solidarity with the hunger strike.

Speaking on the occasion, Sajjad Sharif, Managing Editor, Prothom Alo, said, "We are grateful and applauded for the way journalists from all walks of life have taken to the streets for Rozina from the beginning and protested against the injustice done to her."

Anisul Haque, associate editor of Prothom Alo, said Rozina is just an occasion here. The entire journalistic community is the victim of the injustice and harassment that has befallen him. We have come to protest not only the release of Rozina, but the establishment of full freedom of the press. I have taken to the streets to prevent the harassment of journalists and the silencing of investigative journalism.

Rita Nahar, DRU women's affairs secretary on hunger strike, said a journalist was sent to jail as a thief while media workers across the country were risking their lives to work for the country and its people. Data collection is not a crime. We strongly condemn such acts and demand the unconditional release of Rozina Islam.

Shamima Dola said Rozina has at least 20 reports on irregularities in the health department. No action was taken against a bureaucrat based on his report. However, action was taken against Rozina under an obsolete law. We strongly condemn these reckless acts and demand the unconditional release of journalist Rozina.
