Dhaka, April 5: Constable Nazmul Tareq, who was accused of harassing Tejgaon college teacher Dr Lata Samaddar for wearing a tip, has been suspended. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has formed a committee to investigate the incident.

The victim Dr. Lata Samaddar has expressed relief over the temporary dismissal of the accused constable and formation of an investigation committee. She thanked the media, the police administration and those who were united in her protest.

She told Jago News on Tuesday (April 5).

Lata Samaddar told Jago News, "I lodged a written complaint with the police after the incident. After that the news was published in the media emphasizing the issue. Thanks to the media for being by my side. Thanks also to the police administration. Following the allegations, they quickly identified the accused and suspended him."

Earlier on Monday (April 4) afternoon, DMP Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam informed Constable Nazmul Tareq about his temporary dismissal.

He said an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Police Protection Department and an Assistant Commissioner (AC) of the Tejgaon Division have been assigned to investigate the allegations. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.

On April 2, Dr. Lata Samaddar fell victim to harassment on her way to college from her home on Green Road in the capital. She complained that a middle-aged man with a long beard hurriedly hurled insults at her, saying, "Why are you wearing a tip?" The middle-aged man was wearing a police uniform.

She further alleged that when she protested against the incident, at one stage the man rode the bike on her feet and left. She later lodged a complaint with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

After receiving the complaint, the police immediately started investigating the incident. The accused constable Nazmul Tareq was later identified and taken into police custody.
