Dhaka, October 6, 2020: Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen said the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Kuwait will be further strengthened. He made the remarks during a meeting with the new Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who he met on Monday.

Dr. Momen expressed condolences on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government, and people of Bangladesh on the death of the late emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

He also informed the new Emir about the state mourning in Bangladesh over the death of Sheikh Sabah and also lauded the late Emir's generosity towards Bangladeshi expats.

He also expressed his gratitude to Kuwait for the cooperation extended to the expats.

During the meeting. Momen mentioned that in 1974, the then Foreign Minister and the late Emir Sheikh Sabah came to Bangladesh and took Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the OIC conference. This is a landmark event in the relations between Bangladesh and Kuwait. After that many Muslim countries recognised Bangladesh.

Later, Dr. Momen met with his Kuwaiti counterpart Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh conveyed to the Foreign Minister of Kuwait the concerns of the Kuwaiti expatriate Bangladeshis who were stranded in Bangladesh on holiday due to non-launch of flights between Kuwait and Bangladesh.

He requested to resume flights operations between Kuwait and Bangladesh as soon as possible.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister said a decision would be taken at a meeting in two days.

Dr. Momen called on Kuwait to set up an oil refinery in Bangladesh and the Kuwaiti foreign minister expressed interest in investing in the matter.

The Foreign Minister called upon Kuwait to invest in Bangladesh's economic zones and high-tech parks.

At this time, doctors, nurses and IT professionals in Bangladesh will be able to play an important role in Kuwait, he said. He called for the employment of Bangladeshi workers in agriculture. Kuwait called for the import of medicines and PPE from Bangladesh.

At the time, the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister praised the skills of Bangladeshi expatriate workers. Kuwait's cooperation on the repatriation of the Rohingya people to Myanmar will continue, he said.
