Dhaka, April 21: Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dr Hassan Mahmud said the government was arresting the perpetrators, not any clerics or religious leaders.

He made the remarks after inaugurating an online workshop on "Role of Local Journalists in Implementing Digital Bangladesh" organized by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha and A2I at his official residence in the capital on Tuesday (April 20).

Referring to the BNP secretary general's statement that the government was arresting religious leaders, the minister said the government was arresting the miscreants and their instigators who had carried out violence across the country from March 26 to 28. Arresting those who set fire to innocent people's homes, property and vehicles.

Hassan Mahmud said the government was arresting those who set fire to land offices, burned people's land deeds, damaged fire station-railway stations and carried out attacks on people, as well as their instructors.

He said no good scholar was involved in these crimes. Alem masked people are involved in all this. The government is arresting them.

Regarding the BNP, the minister said, the BNP has always been involved in politics with religion. Politics with evil power. The BNP does politics with those who do not believe in the independence and sovereignty of the country and want to make the country Afghanistan. The way Hifazat leaders used to start procession-meetings all over the country if someone else did it the way Mamunul Haque mocked Rasul (SAW). And Mirza Fakhrul Sahib also used to match it.

Asked about the meeting of Hefazat-e-Islam leaders with the Home Minister on Monday, Hasan Mahmud said, "If anyone wants to meet the government, they can do so. The Home Minister has met." But there will be no deviation in taking action against the miscreants.
