Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 3 August 2023: US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas said that the position of the United States is not in favor of any political party. He said this during an exchange of views with reporters after a courtesy meeting with General Secretary Obaidul Quader at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue party office on Thursday (August 3) at 12:30 p.m.
The American ambassador said, "I have spoken with Awami League, other parties and law enforcement agencies. I have informed everyone about the US policy. I have asked everyone, including Awami League, to make the next election free, fair and impartial."
Peter Haas said, "The United States does not support any particular party. And what we support is a democratic process that will allow the people of Bangladesh to choose their next government."
He said, "This meeting with the Awami League is part of the meetings I have with various partners in Bangladesh. I have met with other political parties, media outlets, civil society, police and security forces. This is also part of what I do as the US ambassador."
"In every meeting I have repeated the same messages and it is our policy that we support free, fair and peaceful elections, without any violence from anyone," said Peter Haas.
The US ambassador said, "We believe everyone has a role to play in making elections free, fair and peaceful. The government has a role, the media has a role, other political parties, civil society and the judiciary, security forces and of course the voters have a role. "
