Dhaka, August 18: Expressing conviction in building the golden Bengal of the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the sacrifice of the Father of the Nation can never go in vain.

"He (Bangabandhu) has given blood for the people of this country. He has bound us in blood debt. We have only one goal - we have to repay the debt of his blood. Bangladesh must be built as the dream of the father of the nation, a hunger-free, poverty-free developed and prosperous golden Bengal. We walk with that promise and with that ideal," the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this on a program aired on Bangladesh Television (BTV) on the occasion of National Mourning Day on Tuesday evening.

She said this while addressing a discussion program titled 'Shokh theke Shakti, Shokh theke Jagoron' (Power from Mourning, Awakening from Mourning) presented by the National Implementation Committee to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the function organized by Tarana Halim. Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, former chairman of Bangladesh University Grants Commission Prof Abdul Mannan and chairman of Bangladesh Awami Juba League Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash spoke.

"I lost everything. I know the pain of losing is very painful. I am enduring that hardship and working towards a goal. The goal is to change the fate of the people of this country by turning that grief into strength. InshaAllah we will build this Bangladesh as the hunger, poverty free, developed, prosperous golden Bangladesh of the dream of the father of the nation. The dream of that country was dreamed by my father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," she said.

"Bangladesh, which was left as a least developed country by the father of the nation, is now recognized as a developing country. Per capita income has risen to 2,227 US dollars. Bangladesh has gained a status in the world in terms of economic development. We have been able to reduce the poverty rate. Earlier it was 45 percent, we have reduced it to 20 percent. The average human life expectancy has risen to 72 years," Sheikh Hasina said.

"Our goal today is that not a single person in this country will be afflicted with the scourge of poverty. Not a single person will be landless. The father of the nation took a program to build houses by distributing khas land for landless people by constructing cluster villages. We have decided on the centenary of his birth that not a single person in Bangladesh will be homeless. We are building houses for homeless people keeping that in mind," she added.
