Dhaka, April 17: Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate (Operation and Maintenance) Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury said that there are nine high-risk, 14 medium-risk and 35 risky buildings in the capital, including the New Super Market. This information was obtained by updating 58 buildings in the last two weeks.

He said these in a press conference at the Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defence on Sunday. This press conference was organized regarding fire risk reduction and fire safety assurance of the important market-shopping malls of the capital Dhaka.

Mohammad Tajul Islam said, "I am listing the dangerous buildings. Every year we update different buildings. Then identify the problems and inform the building owner. If the identified problems are not solved, we pull up the banner so that people are aware. The aim of our activities is to increase public awareness."

He said, 1,511 buildings, markets, restaurants were updated in 2018. There too we have found high risk, medium risk and risky buildings.

Regarding the recent fire incident, he said, "We are not able to put out the fire at the initial stage. We are not able to use the equipment we have because of the lack of rehearsals in the buildings."

He requested everyone to construct buildings in accordance with building codes, maintain fire fighting equipment and organize drills. He also called for guarding every place in the market. He also said that the tendency to burn due to excessive heat wave is very high.

Tajul Islam said, goods cannot be piled up in shops, corridors, stairs and in front of shops. No smoking inside the market.

He said that the fire service should be informed at the beginning of the fire. The fire service should create a smooth working environment. Market goods cannot be dragged during fire fighting.
