Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 25 January 2024: Awami League Joint General Secretary and Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said, "There is extreme disappointment in the BNP. They now realize that boycotting the elections is a sacrifice for them."

He said this while talking to reporters after paying tribute by laying wreaths on behalf of the party leaders at the memorial of Shaheed Matiur Rahman in the 1979 Mass Uprising at Nabakumar Institute in Bakshibazar of the capital on Wednesday on the occasion of the historic Mass Uprising Day.

The foreign minister said, "The whole world is congratulating the Prime Minister for being newly elected. It has upset their heads, so they are going crazy."

Denying the BNP-Jamaat freedom struggle, Dr. Hasan said, "Under the leadership of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, our freedom has come by crossing an ocean of blood and stirring the sleeping Bengali nation. But today, the BNP-Jamaat tries to distort the history of the freedom struggle. The war of independence started with the blowing of a whistle. That is, they denied the freedom struggle."

He said, "In exchange of the blood of many martyrs, through a long freedom struggle, freedom war, our freedom came under the leadership of the father of the nation. Freedom did not come by blowing anyone's whistle. Matiur Rahman's self-sacrifice in accelerating our freedom. We pay tribute to him."

When asked by reporters about the lack of a boat symbol in the upazila elections, Hashan said, "When we formed the government in 2009, then when the upazila elections were held, there was no symbol. The provision of symbols was introduced later. Local government elections have always been without symbols. We are the same as before. I have talked about the procedure. Everyone will be present there and they will vote like anyone else. Those who win will be upazila chairman. This is nothing new."
