Tk 2406 crore will be spent on repairing 2742 km roads damaged by floods

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 20: Two thousand 742 kilometers of roads and 6.971 kilometers of bridges have been damaged across the country, including Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrakona, due to the terrible floods. The government will spend Tk 2,405 crore 88 lakh for these repairs. Such information is known in the damage assessment report of the local government engineering department.

According to the report, the roads of Sylhet division were the most affected by the floods. Two thousand 431 km of roads in the four districts of the division -- Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj -- have been damaged. The possible cost of repairing these roads has been shown as Tk 2,053 crore 79 lakh.

Besides, a total of 2.596 kilometers of small and big bridges have also been damaged by floods in these districts. The cost of repairing them has been estimated at Tk 72 crore 85 lakh. This department will spend Tk 2,126 crore 64 lakh for repairing roads and bridges.

Next among the affected areas is Mymensingh division. A total of 268 km of roads and 3.953 km of bridges have been damaged by floods in Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrakona of the division. The possible cost of repairing them has been estimated at Tk 194 crore 7 lakh.

Twenty-five km of roads and 332 metres of bridges have been damaged in Rangpur division. The possible cost of repairing them has been estimated at Tk 50 crore 25 lakh. Besides, the potential expenditure for the repairing of roads and bridges has been estimated at Tk 31 crore 18 lakh in Chittagong division, Tk 2 crore 75 lakh in Dhaka division and Tk 98 lakh in Rajshahi division.
