Dhaka, August 1: Today (Monday) is the first day of the sad and painful month of August. In this month of 1975, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated.

On August 21, 2004, a group tried to kill the daughter of the Father of the Nation, current Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina by throwing a grenade. Fortunately, she survived that day, but in this incident, 24 people were killed, including Ivy Rahman, the wife of former President Md. Zillur Rahman, and the women's affairs editor of the Awami League. Also, more than 500 leaders and workers were injured.

On the night of August 15, 1975, the assassins not only killed Bangabandhu, Bangabandhu's consort Bangmata Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib, Bangabandhu's children Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Russell and daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rozi Jamal were killed one by one.

Bangabandhu's brother Sheikh Nasser, sister-in-law Abdur Rob Serniabat, nephew youth leader and journalist Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, his wife Arju Moni and Colonel Jamil along with their 16 family members and relatives could not escape from this most despicable murder in the world.

After some misguided members of the army killed the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu and his family, the entire world fell into a deep mourning and spread the venom of hatred.

West German leader Willy Branditt, who won the Nobel Prize after Bangabandhu's murder, said that Bengalis can no longer be trusted after Mujib's murder. A Bengali who can kill Sheikh Mujib can do any heinous act.

Nirad C Chowdhury, a British citizen of Indian origin and eminent writer, described the Bengalis as 'traitors'. He said that by killing the dreamer of the Bengali nation, Sheikh Mujib, they have shown their suicidal character to the people of the world.

The 16 August 1975 issue of The Times of London stated, "Despite everything, Bangabandhu will always be remembered. Because, without him, there is no real existence of Bangladesh." On the same day, the Daily Telegraph published from London said, "Tens of thousands of people in Bangladesh will consider Sheikh Mujib's heinous murder as an irreparable loss."

As every time, the month-long program of Awami League and allied and fraternal organizations will start from the first day of August, keeping August 15 in front. The party has finalized the program earlier.
