Top leader of Hizb ut Tahrir arrested in Dhaka

Dhaka, April 7: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) arrested Md. Mahmud Hasan (30), the top leader of the banned militant organization Hizb ut Tahrir. Mahamud, who has been on the run for 10 years, was arrested in a raid in Sher-e-bangla Nagar area of the capital on Thursday.

On Friday (April 7), Senior Assistant Director of RAB-2 Md. Fazlul Haque said that Mahmud Hasan is the top militant leader of Hizbut Tahrir and a responsible member of Dawati department. In front of different mosques of Dhaka under his leadership, there are jhtika processions with members of Hizb ut Tahrir.

By holding conspiratorial meetings against Bangladesh and distributing leaflets and posters of Hizbut Tahrir, the government and anti-state activities were being carried out. He was arrested once before. He said that after getting out on bail, he continued the activities of the organization.

Stating that there are 3 cases against Mahamud Hasan in Mohammadpur and Paltan police stations, this RAB official said that he was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment in the case of Mohammadpur police station. But he was absconding when the verdict was announced. As a result of intelligence surveillance, he was arrested in Sherebangla Nagar area.

Fazlul Haque also said that the arrested Mahmud completed SSC in 2009 from a reputed educational institution and HSC in 2011 and BBA from a private university.

He got involved in Hizb ut Tahrir through an English medium school teacher in Dhaka. Since then, he has been promoting militancy in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, encouraging the young generation to militancy. Efforts are on to arrest other members of the organization based on the information received from him. This official of RAB also said that legal measures are in process against the arrested Mahmud.
