Trying our best to ease people's sufferings: PM

Dhaka, March 26: Mentioning that when the prices of daily commodities increase, the common man, especially the people with limited income, suffer, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that her government is trying its best to ease people's suffering.

She said, "At the beginning of Ramadan, the prices of some products including dates, imported fruits, lemons, watermelons, onions were a bit high. However, the prices of these products have come down to normal and tolerable levels within a few days."

She said this in his address to the nation on Monday (March 25) evening on the occasion of the country's 54th Independence and National Day.

The Prime Minister said, "Dear countrymen, keeping in view this year's Ramadan month, we have already built sufficient stock of some products including sugar, chickpeas, pulses, edible oil. 50,000 metric tons of onions and about the same amount of potatoes are allowed to be imported from India so that no one can make more profit by creating a monopoly market."

She also said that since the beginning of Ramadan, fish, meat, eggs and milk are being sold in trucks at least 25 places in the capital for the marginalized people.

The PM said that in the first phase, TCB is distributing rice, dal, edible oil, sugar and gram - these five products at affordable prices to one crore card holder families across the country. In the second phase, rice, dal, edible oil, sugar, chickpeas and dates - these six products are being distributed to cardholder families in Dhaka and surrounding areas.

She said, "On the occasion of Eid, the government has given a special allocation of 1 lakh 628 metric tons of rice to 1 crore 62 thousand 800 families across the country. Each family will get 10 kg of rice for free."
