Two Nigerians among seven arrested for social media fraud

Dhaka, March 8: The Detective Cyber and Special Crime Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested seven people, including two Nigerians, on charges of cheating under the guise of fake customs officers. They used their foreign identities to contact the target person's Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and e-mail to steal cash. 

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashrafullah, in-charge of the Web-Based Crime Investigation Team, confirmed the matter on Sunday (March 7) night.

The arrested are: John Joseph (27), Imeka Yurik (30), Lata Akhter (26), Ayesha Akhter (19), Md. Habibur Rahman alias Habib (27), Md. Ashraful Islam alias Kabir (24) and Md. Al Amin (27).

At that time, 14 mobile phones, 20 SIM cards, eight ATM cards of different banks and Tk 99,000 were recovered from them.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashrafullah said a fraudulent group embezzled Tk 21.25 lakh from a person named Habibur Rahman by cheating online.

A case was filed under the Digital Security Act at DMP's Banani police station on March 5 over the incident. During the investigation of the case, the location of the accused was identified with the help of information and technology provided by the plaintiff. The web-based crime investigation team arrested them from the Khilkhet police station area of ​​the capital on Saturday (March 6).

The police official added that the detainees used their foreign identities to communicate with the target through Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and e-mail.

After gaining loyalty, he cheated in a fancy way and took cash. The arrested have been sent to court in the case of Banani police station.
