Dhaka, February 18: The World Food Program (WFP), the United Nations food aid agency, plans to cut aid to the Rohingya population living in refugee camps in Bangladesh, according to a report by Qatar-based media Al Jazeera on Friday.

According to the report, WFP is going to take such a decision because there is not enough money in the fund created for the Rohingyas. Which will be effective from next March.

It is reported that from March 1, the amount of monthly assistance will be reduced by 17 percent to 10 dollars per person. If there is not enough money in the fund, the amount will decrease further from April.

However, due to such a decision of the World Food Program, the suffering of the Rohingya will increase, the United Nations special rapporteur on food security, Mikhail Fakhri, and the reporter on the humanitarian situation in Myanmar, Tom Andrew, have warned.

"If aid is cut, it will have an adverse impact on people who are already food insecure," they said in a joint statement.

They also said that about 750,000 Rohingya living in Bangladesh are currently suffering from food problems. In 2017, these Rohingyas were forced to leave their motherland and seek refuge in Bangladesh due to brutal attacks by the Myanmar army. They also said that almost three percent of the children currently in the refugee camps are suffering from malnutrition.

The experts added, "The impact of these aid cuts will be immediate and lasting. Because refugees are completely dependent on it."

They said that the number of child marriages and child labor has increased among the Rohingyas who are plagued by various problems. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of Rohingyas trying to risk their lives by sea to go to Malaysia and Indonesia. Last Thursday, 69 Rohingyas reached Indonesia in a small boat.
