University students rescued after 10 hours

Dhaka, June 19, 2022: The army has rescued some students of different universities, including Dhaka University (DU), who got stuck in the middle of Surma river due to engine failure in the char adjacent to Doarabazar of Surma river in Sunamganj.

It is learned that on the night of June 14, a group of students of Dhaka University went to visit Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj. They were trapped there by a sudden flood. At the initiative of Sunamganj district administration, they were rescued by ship 'Kapotaksh-Anirban' on Saturday afternoon and sent to Sylhet. At this time several more passengers were picked up in the boat. However, due to a mechanical fault around 8:30 pm, the ship became unusable.

The students pleaded for rescue as soon as possible but could not be rescued overnight. Later, at the request of the Dhaka University administration, an army team rescued them from there after a long 10 hours at 8 am on Sunday. At around 9 o'clock, a total of 31 students including 21 students of Dhaka University were taken to the roof of Sunamganj by speedboat. Later they were taken to Sylhet Cantonment.

Shoaib Ahmed, a third-year student of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University, said the army came to our rescue around 8am. Then we were brought to the roof by speedboat. Now we will go to Sylhet via Gobindaganj. The crippled launch is also OK. Some more students including 16 students of Pharmacy Department of Dhaka University are going to Sylhet by launch.

Professor Abul Mansur Ahmed, chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, said, “I came to know about the students getting stuck on Friday night. Immediately, Sunamganj Cantonment Rescue Commander Brigadier General Shawkat and the district Superintendent of Police (SP) said. I talked to Mizanur Rahman and requested him to rescue me. An army team went to rescue them on Sunday morning. At present the students have been brought to Sylhet Cantonment.
