Dhaka, June 8: The United States has said that they will provide Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine to Bangladesh and not Ozford-AstraZeneca doses.

"We have collected the AstraZeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute of India. About 1.6 million people are waiting for the second dose. We immediately asked the United States for 2 million doses of vaccine. However, the United States has told us that it has some difficulty delivering the AstraZeneca vaccine. Bilaterally they want to provide the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines," a foreign ministry official said.

Asked when and to what extent the vaccine could come, he said, "We are expecting the vaccine within this month. However, they have not informed us yet.

The Biden administration recently announced that it would supply seven million vaccines to 16 Asian countries, including Bangladesh and India. Besides, the United States is donating masks, oximeters and other medical items to Bangladesh.

On the other hand, the government is preparing to bring six lakh vaccines from China on June 13.

Another official said: "The Chinese authorities have said that they will have the vaccine ready by June 13. We will send a plane to bring the vaccines."

Earlier, China had given five lakh vaccines to Bangladesh as a grant.
