Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 15: Voting is underway in Comilla city election on Wednesday in a peaceful and festive atmosphere. The Election Commission has already completed all the preparations for holding the elections in a fair, free and peaceful environment. The campaign ended on Monday night.

Voting, which started at 8 am, will continue till 4 pm today. This is the third election in Comilla City Corporation (CoCC). Earlier, both the votes were held on Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). Voting is being held again maintaining the previous continuity. However, the candidates have no complaints about EVM.

Earlier, BNP-backed Monirul Haque Sakku was elected mayor twice. Although there is a single boat-symbol candidate this time, the general voters of Comilla think that the boat candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat will get some additional benefits as two BNP-backed candidates are fighting for the post of mayor. Apart from this, the organizational position of Comilla Awami League is much stronger than at any other time in the past and the victory of the party candidate is very much certain.

In order to maintain law and order in the Comilla City elections, 3,608 members of law and order forces of different levels have been deployed. Seventy-five checkposts have been set up at different points of the city. The entire city area has been wrapped in a security blanket. This is the first time CCTV cameras have been installed inside and outside the polling centres.

In Comilla City, 149 candidates, including five mayoral candidates, are contesting in this election. The total number of voters in Comilla election this time is 2 lakh 29 thousand 920. Among them 1 lakh 12 thousand 826 are male voters, and 1 lakh 17 thousand 92 are female voters. In addition, there are two third gender voters. This time 22,000 new voters will cast their votes in the election.
