Dhaka, 16 July 2023 : The water of Yamuna river has reached near the danger limit in Bogra.

As of 3pm on Saturday, the water had flowed 9cm below the danger line. Due to continuous increase in water, new river erosion has started in three upazilas of Bogra. People of these areas are leaving their homes. A primary school is under threat within 100 meters of Sariakandi.

According to Bogra District Water Development Board, the water level of Yamuna was 15.84 meters at 3 pm on Friday. At 3 pm on Saturday, the water level was 16.16 meters. In other words, the water has increased by 32 cm in the last 24 hours. The water level of Yamuna at Sariakandi is 16.25 meters. That is, the water is flowing only 9 cm below the danger line.

In this upazila, the water of the river Yamuna has been increasing for the past few days. Erosion has started in the traditional Dharaborsha village of Bohail Union of the upazila due to continuous rise in water. In the last 15 days, more than 100 families have been displaced due to river erosion. A few days ago, about 50 families have taken refuge elsewhere after demolishing their houses. About 15 families are living within 50 meters of the river bank in the erosion area.

Till now about 1 thousand 200 bighas of crop land has been lost in Yamuna. Dharaborsha Government Primary School, the only educational institution in this village, is under threat of erosion. It is located just 100 meters from the main bank of the erosion area. There is a new building under construction. The population of this traditional village of upazila is more than 15 thousand.

Besides, Dharaborsha Forest Garden, one of the tourist centers of this upazila, is under threat. Where the government has several crores of mahogany trees on 1 thousand hectares of land. Where thousands of visitors come every year to have a picnic.

Bogra District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Nazmul Haque said that since there is news of decreasing water in the north. So the water of Yamuna in Sariakandi will increase for a day or two and then start decreasing again. The erosion affected area of Bohail Union will be visited very soon and necessary steps will be taken to prevent erosion there.
