Ziaur Rahman was the 'mastermind' of Sheikh Jamal's murder: Information Minister

Dhaka, April 29: Awami League Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that BNP was the main sponsor of the killers of talented young Sheikh Jamal and the party's founder Ziaur Rahman was one of the 'masterminds' of this murder. Sadly, the truth is they still flourish today.

He said these things to the journalists after paying respects at the tomb of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's second son Shaheed Sheikh Jamal at Banani Cemetery on Friday morning.

Sheikh Jamal was killed by assassins along with Bangabandhu and other family members at Dhanmondi number 32 on August 15, 1975.

Information Minister said, "Today is the happy birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Jamal. May his soul rest in peace on his birthday. Deep respect for his memory. Martyr Sheikh Jamal was imprisoned by Pakistanis in 1971 along with Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and Sheikh Russell. He escaped from that captivity and went to Agartala on foot and took part in the liberation war."

Hasan Mahmud said Sheikh Jamal actively participated in the liberation war for nine months. Participated in the war from the front. Later he joined the army. He became a second lieutenant. He received training from the world famous army training center "Sandhurst" in Britain. He was a brilliant young man. At the same time, he was a cultured person and practiced culture. He had a deep passion for sports.

The information minister said Bangladesh lost a talented young man through the killing of Sheikh Jamal. A promising youth who could have given a lot to the country, contributed to the nation building, has been killed.

Awami League deputy publicity secretary Awlad Hossain Shamim, member of the party's national committee Balram Poddar and general secretary of the Freedom Physicians Council Kamrul Islam were present on the occasion.
