Dhaka, May 15: Cyclone Mocha has damaged 12,000 houses in Cox's Bazar district. Of these, 10,000 were partially damaged and 2,000 were completely damaged, said Cox's Bazar District Commissioner Muhammad Shaheen Imran. He gave this information after visiting the beach at Cox's Bazar Labani Point on Sunday afternoon.

The Deputy Commissioner said, "Though there was no loss of life in Cox's Bazar district due to Cyclone Mokha, there was damage. St. Martin was the worst hit. About 12,000 houses have been damaged in this district due to high speed of rain and wind. 1,200 houses in St. Martin were completely damaged."

He also said, "Two lakh 50 thousand people were sheltered in various shelters in Cox's Bazar during the cyclone. I would not ask them to leave the shelters now even after the effects of the cyclone have subsided. Because, it is still raining and there is tide in the sea. It will be difficult for them to move."

Superintendent of Police Md. Mahfuzul Islam, Awami League Central Committee Religious Affairs Secretary Advocate Sirajul Mostafa, District Awami League General Secretary Mayor Mujibur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Vibhishan Kanti Das and others observed the sea condition with the Deputy Commissioner on Sunday afternoon.

Abdul Malek, a resident of St. Martin, said there was no tide during Mokha's Tandab. So the island of St. Martin stood out in the ocean. About 90 percent of the people in St. Martin suffered extensive damage to their homes. Thousands of small trees on the island have fallen. 11 people were injured when the tree fell.

Jasim Uddin Shubo, another resident of St. Martin, said that when Mokha's ordeal started, it seemed that he would never see anyone again. I see houses being blown away by the wind in front of my eyes. The people of the island were very frightened.

Mujibur Rahman, chairman of St. Martin Union Parishad, said that many houses were blown away in the storm. Assistance will be given to those who are most affected.
