135 leader-activists of BNP-Jamaat sentenced to prison in separate sabotage cases

Dhaka, Dec 22: The court ordered 135 BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists to be jailed for different terms in five cases of sabotage committed in Turag, Rampura, Mirpur, Hazaribagh and Banshal police station areas of the capital. Besides, the court acquitted 100 people as the charges were not proved. Five separate metropolitan magistrate courts of Dhaka announced the verdict on Thursday.

The court sentenced 93 BNP leaders and activists to three years imprisonment in two sections in the case of vandalism committed at Turag police station area in the capital five years ago. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sheikh Sadi sentenced them to prison. In addition to imprisonment, the court ordered a fine of Tk 4,000 in two clauses to each accused. They will have to undergo another 14 days of imprisonment in default of payment of fine.

The court sentenced 13 leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami to two years of rigorous imprisonment in the Rampura police station area sabotage case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ataullah sentenced them to prison. In addition to the imprisonment, each accused will have to undergo another month's imprisonment without paying a fine of Tk 5,000.

The court has sentenced eight BNP leaders and activists to two-and-a-half years imprisonment in the case of sabotage at Mirpur Model Police Station area in the capital. They will have to serve two years in prison as the two sentences run concurrently. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim sentenced him to prison. In addition to imprisonment, the court ordered each of them to pay a fine of Tk 5,000. In default of payment of fine, they will have to undergo another month of imprisonment without work.

The court has sentenced six BNP leaders and workers to one and a half years in two sections in the case of sabotage of Hazaribag police station in the capital 13 years ago. As the charges were not proved in the case, the remaining 51 accused in the charge sheet were acquitted. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir gave this verdict.

A decade ago, the court sentenced 15 BNP leaders and workers to six months' imprisonment without labor and a fine of Tk 2,000 in a case filed at Banshal police station in old Dhaka. Meanwhile, the remaining 47 accused in the charge sheet of the case were acquitted as the charges were not proved. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Sultan Sohag Uddin announced the verdict of this case.
