Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 26: Around 4 lakh people of coastal 19 districts who got disaster-resistant houses as a gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not have to go to shelters to escape the ravages of Cyclone Sitrang.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, 61,378 landless and homeless families were provided with disaster-resistant houses in the last 2 years in 19 coastal districts. Around 4 lakh people who got these houses did not need to go to shelters during Cyclone Sitrang. As the shelter houses are disaster-resistant, there has been no news of any damage to any house so far.

The concerned officials said that their disaster risk has been reduced due to the gift house of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As a result, the safety of people, cattle, and livestock is ensured during calamities. According to the latest information, 2 lakh 19 thousand 690 people and 45,442 cattle took shelter in shelters in 19 coastal districts to escape the ravages of Cyclone Sitrang.

Officials said that houses in the third phase of the shelter are more durable than the first and second phases. In the third phase, Tk 2 lakh 59 thousand 500 is being spent on the construction of each house. In the third phase houses, RCC pillars, grade vim, tensile linkers etc. are added.

In 1997, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister's Office, took a project called 'Ashrayan' to rehabilitate the landless, homeless, and displaced people due to cyclones, floods, and river erosion.

Five lakh seven thousand 244 landless and homeless families have been rehabilitated across the country from 1997 to March 2022 under Asharyan and Asharyan-II schemes. Beneficiaries under the Asharyan scheme include minorities, hijras and Vedic communities, and other marginalized groups in the society.
