5 Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar locked down

Dhaka, May 21: The administration has announced lockdown of 5 Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox's Bazar. Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Md Samchu-Douja Nayan said this late on Thursday night. The lockdown in five Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf began on Friday (May 21st) morning.

The Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner said that the lockdown has started in five Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar from this morning, which will continue till further instructions. These are: 2-W, 3, 4, 15 in Ukhia and Rohingya Camp No. 24 in Teknaf.

According to sources, there are 34 Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox's Bazar. The Office of the Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation has announced lockdowns in 4 Rohingya camps in Ukhia and 1 in Teknaf.

As of Wednesday, 863 people had been infected with coronavirus in Cox's Bazar camps, including 13 Rohingya who have died. So far, coronavirus samples of 41,477 people have been tested. Among the infected, 639 Rohingyas have recovered. There are still 211 people in isolation.

The number of infections and deaths is about half, within three to four months of the second outbreak of corona. Now the rate of corona infection in the camps is on the rise. As a result, the Rohingya camps have been warned to take precautionary measures in case of an outbreak of the corona infection.

Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Samchu-Douja said the rate of infection in the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar was on the rise due to the second outbreak of the Corona epidemic. After discussing this with the concerned people, it has been decided to declare a lockdown in the camps where the rate of coronavirus infection is on the rise.

Among them, local and foreign organisations engaged in the service of Rohingya, including the camp administration, have been informed about the action to be taken in announcing lockdown in 5 camps in Ukhia and Teknaf. It also called for effective lockdown.

Referring to the instructions, the Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner said, ‘Residents of the camps declared lockdown will not be able to travel outside their own camps. Restrictions have been imposed on the movement of anyone except for medical and food emergency needs.

In addition, instructions have been given to limit the activities of local and foreign companies in the camps declared lockdown without any need, said Samchu-Douja.
