Dhaka, July 12: On the day the country reported 230 fatalities- its highest Covid-19 single-day death- and another 11,874 new infections, Bangladesh also registered 53 new dengue cases, the most in a day in 2021, on Sunday.

Of the total 53 patients admitted to the hospital, eight are in government hospitals and 45 in private hospitals. Thus, the number of dengue patients admitted in government and private hospitals of the country stood at 190 people. Of them, 189 have been admitted to hospitals in the capital Dhaka and one outside Dhaka.

This was stated in a report on dengue signed by Dr Kamrul Kibria, Assistant Director, Health Information Unit (MIS) of the Department of Health and Officer-in-Charge of Health Emergency Operations and Control Room on Sunday.

According to the statistics, a total of 736 dengue patients were admitted in the country, including the capital, from January 1 to July 11 this year. Of these, 32 patients were admitted in January, nine in February, 13 in March, three in April, 43 in May, 271 in June and 355 in July (till July 11). Among the admitted patients, 536 have already recovered and returned home.

According to experts, the rise in dengue cases will exacerbate the helthcare sector, which has already been dented by the swelling coronavirus cases.

They say the breeding season of the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquito is underway during the current monsoon season. During this time, due to intermittent rains, water accumulates in different places. Aedes mosquitoes breed in clean water in under construction and abandoned buildings, roofs of houses, bathroom commodes, patios, flower tubs, abandoned coconut shells, car tires and refrigerator-AC. So if clean water has accumulated somewhere for more than three days, it should be discarded.
