Dhaka, August 10: Large areas of Chittagong district are flooded due to heavy rains and landslides. About seven lakh people of the district have become waterlogged. Among them, Satkania and the entire Lohagara upazila area have been submerged in water. In addition, thousands of people are spending days in dire conditions due to waterlogging in most areas of Chandnaish, Banshkhali, Patia, Raujan. Crop fields, shops, markets, educational institutions in these areas are also submerged in water. Similarly, the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway has been almost closed for two days due to waterlogging. However, the water in the Satkania and Lohagara sections of the highway began to recede from noon on Wednesday, but it continued to rise in the Chandanish section.

There is an acute shortage of fresh water in the waterlogged areas of Chittagong. Local public representatives are complaining about not getting relief assistance even from the government.

Satkania Upazila Chairman Abdul Motaleb said, the entire Satkania is still under water. Although the water is decreasing from Kerani Hat, the water level in the whole upazila is only 10 percent lower than on Tuesday. We have to go to Satkania via Banskhali Chanpur. Cars cannot be taken to Upazila Parishad. You have to go to the Upazila Parishad by boat.

He said that no new relief allocation has been received from the government for the water stranded people. We personally and the wealthy of the area are personally helping the needy people.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandanish Police Station Anwar Hossain said that the wide road from Kasaipara of Chandanish section of Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway is still knee deep. On Wednesday morning, the water receded a little but rose again in the afternoon. This is causing extreme disruption to the traffic on the road. However, the highway was not completely closed.

Chittagong Additional District Commissioner (General) Rakib Hasan said, seven lakh people across Chittagong including Lohagara, Satkania, Chandanish, Raujan and a part of Patia have become waterlogged. Now the water has started receding. So far our 500 shelters are fully ready. 600 metric tons of food aid has been given in the whole of Chittagong.
