Absconding Tarique Rahman is facing 75 cases

Dhaka, 21 January 2024 : Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman were arrested in 2007 during the caretaker government.

Tarique Rahman was released on bail on September 3, 2008 and moved to London on September 11 for treatment.

Since then he is staying in London with his family. From there he is serving as acting chairman of BNP.

He has been leading the BNP since February 9, 2018 after Khaleda Zia was imprisoned.

There are 75 cases of murder, corruption and defamation against Tarique Rahman in London. Among them, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment in the 21 August 2004 grenade attack case. Besides, the court jailed him in five more cases including acquiring illegal wealth. He is absconding in all cases.

According to court and police sources, out of 75 cases, 65 petition cases have been filed against him for defamation. Three cases have been filed under the Special Powers Act.

There is one case each under Information and Communication Technology Act and Digital Security Act. There are five cases under other sections of the Penal Code including allegations of extortion. After the much-discussed One/Eleven caretaker government took office, an anti-corruption drive was launched against leaders of various political parties and businessmen.

As part of this, Tarique Rahman was arrested on March 7, 2007. After the arrest, he was remanded for proper investigation of the case.

He was released on September 3, 2008 after serving 18 months in prison. Tarique was arrested in 13 cases in those 18 months. He was granted bail in 13 cases step by step. He left Dhaka for London on September 11, eight days after his release from prison.
