Another 114 border guards of Myanmar entered Bangladesh

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 6 February 2024: Due to the ongoing conflict inside Myanmar, 229 members of the Border Guard Police (BGP) have so far fled to Bangladesh with weapons. 115 people came earlier. Another 114 people have taken refuge in Bangladesh.

Among them are members of the BGP and other forces of the Myanmar government. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) public relations officer Md. Shariful Islam said on the morning of Tuesday, February 6, that the BGB had disarmed the BGP members who had taken shelter in Bangladesh. They have been taken to the Thyngkhali Cyclone Centre.

Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi woman and a Rohingya citizen of Bandarban were killed by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar. The incident took place in Jalpaitli area of Ward No. 4 of Ghumdhum UP of Naikshyongchari Upazila on Monday afternoon. The deceased Hashina Begum (52) is the wife of Badsha Mia of that area. Besides, the identity of the Rohingya man killed (55) is not known.

Earlier, several mortar shells landed in Tambru area of Naikshyongchari during the shelling on Sunday. One named Prabir Dhar, son of Yudhisthira Dhar of that area, was injured.

Myanmar's ambassador to Dhaka, Aung Kyaw Moe, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday in connection with the death of two people who were hit by mortar shells from across the Myanmar border.

Also, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered the Bangladesh Armed Forces and BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) to be patient on the Myanmar issue. Law Minister Anisul Haque said this in response to a supplementary question by Jatiya Party Secretary General Mojibul Haque Chunnu during the Jatiya Sangsad question and answer session on Monday.

The law minister said that Bangladesh is monitoring the ongoing situation very closely and action will be taken soon. Considering the safety of the students, arrangements have been made to close some educational institutions on the border, said the law minister. For more than five decades, Myanmar's various armed rebel groups have been in conflict with the military.
