Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 18: Taking part in the President's dialogue, Bangladesh's ruling party Awami League has made four proposals on the formation of a new Election Commission (EC). These include strengthening the financial position of the Election Commission, enacting laws to set up commissions and ensuring the use of more information technology in all types of elections.

A 10-member delegation led by party president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina made the proposals in a dialogue with the president on Monday (January 17) afternoon. Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader briefed reporters on the matter at the party's office.

It has been said in the proposal given by the Awami League- 1. The President shall appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners in accordance with the provisions of Article 118 of the Constitution. 2. He shall appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners in the process as the President deems fit for the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. 3. An appropriate law may be enacted for the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners subject to the provisions of Article 118 of the Constitution. As there is no such law at present, in accordance with the provisions of Article 118 of the Constitution, the President has no obligation to abide by any law other than the Constitution in appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. However, in order to uphold the constitutional consciousness, the law is required to determine the qualifications and disqualifications of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners and their appointment process. 4. In the interest of fair, free, fair and transparent elections, it is necessary to ensure the use of more information technology in all elections.

Earlier, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at Bangabhaban with the delegation at 3:55 pm. They left after the meeting at 5:10 pm.
