Dhaka, May 17: Bangladesh has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take urgent steps to end the ongoing violence and ensure security in Palestine. The call was made by Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at an emergency virtual meeting of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday (May 16).

"Bangladesh thinks that there can be no excuse for killing innocent civilians. Interrupting the prayers of any person on the basis of international human rights law and human rights cannot be justified. There can be no argument in favor of it," he said.

"Bangladesh believes in an integrated and sustainable solution in line with the UN resolution, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Quarter Roadmap. As a key member of the UN, the UNSC should ensure peace and security in the international arena," he said.

The Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Sunday that the OIC had called an emergency meeting to protest the terrorist attacks on innocent civilians in al-Quds al-Sharif, the bombing of the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque and the attack on worshipers and Sheikh Jarrah Palestinians.

At the meeting, Bangladesh presented a statement on behalf of the OIC to the United Nations and agreed to convene the 10th emergency special session of the UN General Assembly if the UNSC failed to fulfill its responsibilities.

The Foreign Minister called upon all to work for the welfare of humanity and for the OIC member states to stand up strongly for humanity. At this time, Bangladesh expressed deep grief and sorrow for the casualties in the violence in Palestine.
