Dhaka, September 9: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam has said that Bangladesh will not recognize the interim government formed by the Taliban in Afghanistan. He made the remarks while addressing reporters on Wednesday (September 8).

Mentioning that Bangladesh is monitoring the policy of the Taliban, the state minister said that Bangladesh would support multilateral initiatives like the United Nations and the European Union for the development of Afghanistan.

The Taliban on Tuesday announced an interim government in Afghanistan headed by Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund. Taliban co-founder Abdul Gani Baradar will act as a deputy. Sirajuddin Haqqani has been given the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Earlier, on the night of August 30, the last US troops left Kabul. This marked the end of the 20-year Afghan war in the United States.

Meanwhile, China has welcomed the new caretaker government of Afghanistan.

Beijing said in a statement that it welcomed the end of more than three weeks of chaos in Kabul with the formation of a new interim government. At the same time, the Taliban has been called upon to restore peace and order in Afghanistan. Condemning the withdrawal of US troops, China said it had done everything unplanned and in a hurry.
