Bawali killed in tiger attack in Sundarbans

Dhaka, March 17: A Bawali named Md. Abul Kalam (45) was killed in a tiger attack in the Sundarbans. The incident took place around 2pm on Tuesday (March 17) while collecting golpata in the Payratuni canal near the Sundarbans. 

The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam, son of Atiyar Gazi of Chhotakupat village under Atulia union of Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira.

According to the locals, some Bawalis including Kalam went to the forest a few days ago to collect golpata with a permit from Burigoalini station. On Tuesday afternoon, a tiger caught him while he was cutting golpata in Payratuni canal. Later, other Bawalis teamed up and rescued his body from the tiger.

Upon receiving the news, the members of the forest department recovered the body and brought it to the locality.

Sultan Ahmed, Burigoalini station officer of the forest department, said forest workers recovered the body from the spot and brought it back. Details will be informed later.
