Dhaka, June 14: The 76th session of the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the use of multilingualism in all its activities. According to the proposal, from now on, information on all types of activities of the organisation will be available in English, French, Russian as well as Bengali.

The UN General Assembly on Friday passed India's resolution on the introduction of multilingualism. The proposal adds Bengali, Hindi and Urdu as official and unofficial languages to the UN's global communications department as the agency's means of communication. In addition to these languages, information on all UN activities can be found in Portuguese and Kiswahili.

There are six official languages of the United Nations. These languages are English, Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic and French. TS Tirumurthy, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said the addition of Bengali, Hindi and Urdu to the list would facilitate the use of language as a medium for disseminating information to the United Nations.

The proposal to introduce multilingualism was presented by India at the UN General Assembly with Andorra and Colombia. TS Tirumurthy thanked UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for emphasizing the use of multilingualism in the organization's activities.

He said India welcomes the mention of Bengali, Hindi and Urdu for the first time as a means of exchanging important information and messages with the United Nations.
