BNP leaders Amir Khosru, Zaheeruddin Swapan in jail in police killing case

Dhaka, Nov 10: A court has ordered BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and media cell convenor Zahir Uddin Swapan to be sent to jail after the remand in the case filed at capital's Paltan Model Police Station in connection with the death of police constable Amirul Islam Parvez (32) in a clash between BNP's leaders and activists around the BNP's grand rally.

They were produced in the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday. Meanwhile, they were kept in the court's jail. Later, investigating officer and DB Police Inspector Md. Tariqul Islam requested to keep them in jail until the investigation of the case is over. In view of the application, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rashidul Alam ordered to send them to jail.

Earlier, on November 3, Amir Khosru and Swapan were brought to court and the investigating officer of the case applied for a 10-day remand for the purpose of investigating the case. After the hearing that day, the court granted them a six-day remand. On October 28, around the BNP's general meeting in Naya Paltan, BNP leaders and activists flocked to Nayapaltan and its surrounding areas since that morning. In the afternoon, when the party's leaders and workers clashed with the police, at one point the mass meeting broke up.

A policeman on duty, Amirul, fell on the road after being hit on the head in Box Culvert Road area of Fakirapool during the clash. Later he was rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead. Amirul's house is in Daulatpur Upazila of Manikganj.

Police sub-inspector Masuk Mia filed a murder case as a plaintiff in this incident on October 29 at Paltan Model Police Station. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was made the main accused in the case.

Besides, 164 people including top leaders of BNP have been accused in the case. Other notable accused in this case are BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
