Dhaka, February 11: At least 10 people were killed and 35 others injured as a bus and a truck collided head-on in Jhenaidah on Wednesday.

The accident took place at Barobazar on the Jessore-Jhenaidah road around 3pm on Wednesday (February 10). The injured have been admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex in Jessore and Jhenaidah.

Witnesses said a JK Paribahan bus was heading to Kushtia on Wednesday. When the bus crossed Barobazar and reached in front of Amjad Ali filling station, it braked to save the passengers on the road. The bus overturned and fell on the road. At that time, a truck coming from the opposite direction pushed hard in the middle of the bus. The passenger bus lost control and overturned on the road, killing 10 people on the spot.

An eyewitness at the scene said, "I was working in a paddy field on the side of the road. At that time a person was crossing the road. A speeding passenger bus braked to save him. The bus lost control and overturned on the road with a loud noise. At that moment, a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction hit the middle of the bus. The bus twisted. At that moment, the truck was able to escape."

Kamal Hossain, a bus passenger admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex in Jhenaidah, said, "I got on the bus from Chanchra junction in Jessore city. The bus was moving recklessly. The road collided with a truck as soon as it crossed the Barobazar town. Then the bus overturned. I can't say what happened after that."
